Connie Lim - Sugar
Visit her website to learn about the inspiration behind this video, which really is a work of modern art. The dancing, the costuming, the makeup, the choreography, and of course, the voice.
When I was in middle school, I used to look up to Connie because it seemed she had it all - the brains, the beauty, the popularity and the talent that could make an entire auditorium of 13-year-olds collectively hold their breath. Listening to musical theater. Not easy.
In high school, even though we went to rival schools, I would hear through the grapevine of PTA parents how she racked up countless accolades - Choreo soloist, ASB President, Homecoming Queen. She was quite literally everything I wanted to be, the quintessential role model.
And now, she’s pursuing her dream with abandon. That, I find, is something to admire deeply, not just a juvenile superficiality. To me, she’s doing what she was born to do - perform - and consequently is the antithesis to what I am seeing more and more of post-graduation, the people who are trudging down the beaten career path with their heads down. The person I don’t want to be. Graduating from college has been a nightmarish dose of reality, but seeing someone whom I’ve always admired go for what she loves is truly inspirational.
So spread the word about her music, because you just don’t see talent like this often enough. Best of luck, Connie :)
