I came to the realization today that anyone looking at my blog could assume I was in a myriad of places, particularly New York City. But the fact of the matter is, I’m in Shanghai, where I’ve wanted to be for years. I need to put my heart into this adventure, as opposed to looking towards the past or the future.
I have been here for a little over three weeks, and I have not fallen in love. True, I love the idea of Shanghai, I love the scent of Shanghai, I love the bustle of Shanghai. This is where my grandparents met over 60 years ago, this is where my father was born, and now, this is where I’m meant to be. It’s an understatement to say it’s an exciting time to be here - just as Beijing was on the tip of everyone’s tongue because of the Olympics, Shanghai is because of the World Expo.
Two years ago, I was too overwhelmed to blog my experiences at the Olympics, and I refuse to make the same mistake again. Even if it’s one photo a day or one snippet of a conversation, I want to document my time here, starting with today.
We visited the USA Pavilion today, which was a treat. My friend Rune is the director of communications there, so we were lucky enough to avoid the five-hour-long lines. We had lunch at the 1776 Suite, where my stomach was treated to a respite from Chinese food. Cobb salad, I have never appreciated you more. Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure:
Before. Empty. Just wait.

See the hordes of Chinese people waiting outside? They’re about to come in.

AHHHHH, so many people!!!

Who’s the opening shot of the USA video? Kobe, obvi.

Michelle Kwan’s in there too. Shoutout to my fellow Gamma Phi, what uppp.

Pepsi’s concept video. I liked the different panes.

Didn’t take too many photos today, but I promise I’ll be back! Overall, a successful trip to the Expo. Many more blog posts to come.
