If your everyday life seems poor to you, do not accuse it; accuse yourself, tell yourself you are not poet enough to summon up its riches; since for the creator there is no poverty and no poor or unimportant place.

“My closest friends live all over the place—in North Carolina and New York, in Mississippi and California, in Las Vegas and London and Atlanta, in Oregon and Alabama and Andalucía, Spain. Sometimes we see each other a lot, and sometimes, for stretches, not at all, which is fine. I’d rather see the true friend once a year than suffer a faux friend every day of the week just for the sake of having someone around. The deepest friendships have nothing to do with proximity; they aren’t based on how long we’ve known each other but on how well we love each other.”

To paraphrase, I have no idea where I’m headed, but at least I’m making some headway.

condenasttraveler:

“The nearest thing to writing a novel is traveling in a strange country. Travel is a creative act—not simply loafing and inviting your soul, but feeding the imagination, accounting for each fresh wonder, memorizing and moving on. The discoveries the traveler makes in broad daylight—the curious problems of the eye he solves—resemble those that thrill and sustain a novelist in his solitude. It is fatal to know too much at the outset: boredom comes as quickly to the traveler who knows his route as to the novelist who is overcertain of his plot. And the best landscapes, apparently dense or featureless, hold surprises if they are studied patiently, in the kind of discomfort once can savor afterward. Only a fool blames his bad vacation on the rain.” —Theroux, Sunrise with Seamonsters

I love this.

687 days ‘til London 2012!

Saw these posters for the upcoming Olympic Games and loved the designs:

2008 Olympics: best experience of my life. How can I get back there in 2 years?

Trying to travel plan for the holiday in China, and Yangshuo is looking like it’s going to be a contender. I’ve always seen photos of the dreamy Chinese rivers, yet I’ve never been myself. Now if only I can figure out how to get there…

My boy’s coming to China! Thank goodness for trans-Atlantic flights… Google indicates that kayaking from Washington to Hawaii, then from Hawaii to Shanghai, is the practical way to reach China. We think otherwise.
Every 11:11 wish, crossed finger and bedtime prayer is coming true. Now I can start crossing days off the calendar :) My heart is so happy it might burst.
*Addendum: If this is too mushy for you (ahem, Brandon) be thankful I didn’t connect the dots and draw a giant, pink heart across the Atlantic Ocean. I thought about it…

A video about Shanghai’s street food scene, featured on CNT’s blog aggregator. It’s like watching live art. Yum.

Dream destination: Fiji

Since before I can remember, the location I’ve dreamed of visiting is Fiji. Pristine beaches, snapshot-worthy sunsets, village huts - what else is wanting? Maybe I’ll make it happen, since I’m on this side of the world and all. Just need to start a Fijian piggy bank, asap.

How can you see these photos and not believe in God?
